Synthetic Cannabinoids like “Spice”

Do we make products with synthetic cannabinoids?

We often get asked these days if we carry or make any products with synthetic cannabinoids. This leads me to believe that people don’t really know what happens when people injest these cannabinoids. They are cheaper to create and therefore products can be made cheaper. Here at Hemp Trails/Molly Jane we would never sacrifice safety and efficacy of products to save a few pennies, but we will still do everything we can to keep cost down.

THC-P, THC-JD, THC-H, and THC-B can all be made synthetically and all of them are naturally occuring in very small amounts in the natural plant (0.0001% in some cases).  Once they are made synthetically and put into a product, they bind 30x more tightly to cannabinoid receptors. People think they are very high but in actuality, they are frying their cannabinoid receptors. “But while some of THCP’s 33x greater binding affinity may be wasted on already-overloaded cannabinoid receptors, it still seems likely that THCP will be more potent than delta 9 THC for many people.” This author has already been told personally by ER nurses AND TBI (Tennessee Bureau of Investigation) officers in Memphis, TN that they have seen first hand accounts of people who are calling 911 or coming into the ER or being caught by the police acting having very strange, erratic behavior and/or being generally very ill from these synthetic cannabinoids.

What are synthetic cannabinoids?

According to the CDC, “these seemingly innocent packages of “fake weed” can cause serious side effects that are very different from those of marijuana..” These include, but are not limited to, rapid heart rate, vomiting, agitation, confusion, and hallucinations. There is no way we would ever feel comfortable putting these items on the street. Delta8 THC however, it is worth noting, CAN be synthetic. This is why it is so important to know your source. The lab that we use does not make synthetic Delta8 THC. Pur Iso Labs in Texas where they have very similar regulations to use here in Tennesee.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, synthetic cannabinoids can be sold in inhalers, sprayed on smokeable products, vaporized, sold in cartridges. This author will add they can also be put into edible products as well.  As with most things cannabis, we cannot know for sure because very little acutal research has OR CAN be done on cannabis. However, how Spice specifically reacts in fairly well know, which is why it has been federally banned. These cannabinoids, when naturally occuring in the cannabis plant, are not dangerous. When people use chemicals to recreate them in large amounts they can be incredibly dangerous. There is also a decent amount of anecdotal evidence already even though these products have only been on the market a short time.

Allow me to be clear, these new sythetically made cannabinoids are NOT spice. However, they do seem to have properties similar to the spice chemical, including the side effects that are seen when a person used spice. Add this to the fact that they often come in shapes and packaging that is extremely attractive to children, it is no wonder than Tennessee has just passed HB403/SB378 outlawing such packaging and shapes.

New Regulations (coming soon) for Tennessee!

Rest assured, Hemp Trails CBD is reading up and implementing all of the new rules and regulations for the coming year. Some are going into effect on July 1st, 2023, while others will not go into effect until July 1st, 2024.
